Last night i saw an interview with Alain de Bottom discussing some topics from his book, The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work. Alain gives great insight into the psyche on job satisfaction and finding meaning in our lives. Below is a small snippet from the full transcript from his interview on ABC’s Lateline.

“Well, like anyone, I’ll talk personally, but I think the career crisis is a staple of modern life. As I say, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t, at least on a monthly basis, seriously wonder about where they’re going.”

In celebration of Professor Hawking’s amazing recovery (see below post), and the newly available WordPress feature to embed TED talks, i have decided to post this for your neurological pleasure.

You may have heard that the great Stephen Hawking was admitted to hospital yesterday and was (According to reports) “very ill” with a chest infection.

An update on his website this morning (hawking.org.uk) states “Professor Hawking is being kept in for observation at Addenbrooke’s hospital this morning. He is comfortable and his family is looking forward to him making a full recovery.”

Truely amazing considering how many times he has faced the other side. To start with survival after ten years of diagnosis is nearly unheard of. Hawking was diagnosed when he was 21. He was told he would not survive much more than 2 or 3 years.

In 1985 he contracted pneumonia and came very close to death. He has emergency tracheotomy and pulled through (this is when he lost his ability to speak).

All the best to you Mr Hawking, and wishing you a speedy recovery!

Rupert Murdoch

“People are used to reading everything on the net for free, and that’s going to have to change”, Rupert Murdoch said last week.

You mean we pay for internet access, have to scroll through the billions of adverts you cleverly place inbetween paragraphs (and make millions off), and you want us to pay you for the pleasure of reading trashy gossip? huuuueeeeeuuuwww… oh my excuse me!

I read this and i feel sick. People have to learn to understand how the world works these days… yes Mr Murdoch, you included. What do you think the internet is exactly? Have you ever heard the saying “Information Superhighway”??

“Nobody is making money with free content on the web except search [engines]”, he grumbled at an event in Washington DC.

diddums… one less ivory back scratcher

Right now authorities on the island of Bali, Indonesia, are killing dogs in the street. In a kneejerk reaction to six suspected human rabies fatalities, the government has started culling dogs in a misguided attempt to stop the spread of the disease.

So far over 1,000 dogs have died – many are being poisoned with strychnine, which leaves the animals fully conscious while they suffer convulsions and eventually suffocate.

As a tourist hot spot Bali cannot afford to lose its ‘rabies-free’ status. However, the Balinese government’s response to this suspected outbreak is ineffective as well as inhumane – a dog cull does not attack the root cause of the disease and cannot safeguard human health.

Take Action – Sign an online letter to the Balinese governor, asking him to end the cull and adopt a humane approach to rabies prevention that will protect both animals and people.

Paradigm Shifts

Evolution of information is going to play a significant role in the future of the human race. With massive technology advances, and high demand for better, faster, stronger everything, the role the (currently known as) internet will play is huge. Web 2.0 has given us ways of linking, combining and sharing data which requires minimal technical knowledge.

Every laptop/monitor will essentially become windows, looking inside this web of interlinked data, thoughts and information. We will be looking into The Machine. All information will be able to be viewed through these windows… but… you guessed it… governments don’t want the public to know to much. Thus censorship. No doubt even the word “censorship” will inevitably be spun into a new buzz word by politicians to make it seem like they are helping us!

The machine will connect itself to every interlinkable piece of data available on the current “web” allowing endless connections, much like how the human brain works. It will even go futher by giving us solutions to questions that would be completely inconcievable to us as a mere human.

So where will this leave us? …. especially in relation to copyright laws. Considering the internet is one big copying device (every time you view something on screen it has been copied) something will have to give sooner or later. New Entrepreneurs will find new ways to exploit hits and page views, human life and machines will grow closer and closer. Many people don’t even think of FaceBook, for example, as a digital extension of themself. Every time you use the internet these days you are leaving digital fingerprints everywhere… i just decided to call this Digital DNA (DDNA), not sure if its been coined before but hey…. let me know!

When people cross themselves over into the digital realm they are open to all the flaws and vunurabilities of technology. Has anyone come up with a business plan to allow people to fully erase themself from this growing machine? No… why? because it is impossible. Records, even public records, are kept online. Wheather you like it or not we will all be a part of The Machine, even if it is only you DDNA. Every item on this planet and beyond will have it’s place within The Machine. Essentially our collective whole will be The Machine… but will we be it or will it be us?

The Creation Museum is a creationist museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, designed to promote young Earth creationism. The museum presents an account of the origins of the universe, life, mankind, and man’s early history according to a literal reading of the book of Genesis.

As they are not too interested in providing facts, i thought i would present the only facts i can find on this farce.
